Little Town on the Prairie

Today we slept in and had breakfast that required preparation it was good to take it slow again after several days of hustle and lots of driving.

We took a tour of some Little House-associated buildings in De Smet - the Surveyor's house from By the Shores of Silver Lake, the original 1 room schoolhouse and a replica of the Brewster school where Laura taught and the house in town that Pa and Ma moved into a couple of years after Laura was married. The pageant last night was on the original homestead claim and had a bunch of replica buildings - a shanty, a dugout and what have you. But we didn't go back there today, in part because we took our time and had to get miles I but also because I'd rather see authentic artifacts than replicas. We did slow down on our way out of town and appreciate that the 5 cottonwood trees that Pa planted on the claim were still there. We saw them as we drove past!

I planned for the drive away from De Smet to be shorter so we could have a more relaxed day. We arrived at Lewis and Clark State park in Onawa, Iowa with enough time to enjoy a swim in the river, eat dinner and learn a little Spider Solitaire from Grandma. The kids & I got the camper up in about 10 minutes and they are doing a great job with their standing chore of washing the dishes. The moon was amazingly gorgeous, fu and bright and orange, as it came up over the river. Everyone else is asleep and I'm lying here with a lovely breeze flowing through the camper and such a sense of peace about me. This is a fun trip!
Today's camera roll:
Our campsite really was just a wide patch on the road!
Pioneer women - the matching bonnets & aprons were pretty cool!
Re-enactment of last night's pageant
Sticks of hay!
Duncan grinds wheat in a coffee mill
Awesome
The water was warm and the river was fun!
Spider Solitaire lessons on Grandma's bunk
My camera doesn't do it justice
